Boss Lady is a series that shares personal insights from creative women in business. This week we talk to the amazingly talented Melissa Noucas, blogger behind The Atelier and paper shop + design studio owner. You must check out her line of beautiful hand lettered and watercolor paper goods!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a designer, blogger, and online boutique owner currently based in Philadelphia. I started The Atelier, my life & style blog, in 2012 as a creative outlet to share the things that I love, and opened my shop and design studio in 2013 (we just turned 1!). My background is in fashion and business, and when I’m not designing or blogging, you’ll find me exploring the city, sketching or at brunch.
What prompted you to start your own business instead of working for a larger company?
After interning, interviewing, and working for both large and small companies, I decided to give my dream of owning my own business a shot. I learned a lot from my time at each company, but in the back of my mind I knew that building my business was something that I was truly passionate about and wanted to do. I’ve always dreamt of creating a product line, so being able to check that off my list was so exciting. I love that the possibilities are endless when working for yourself, and that you can take your business in any direction you choose.
I personally love stationary and all things paper. I’m also a snail mail over email type of girl, especially with invites and thank you notes. What inspires you and fuels your creativity?
Getting snail mail is the best! I hear it’s making a comeback. I can honestly be inspired by anything, but I definitely draw a lot of inspiration from fashion – the silhouettes, patterns, styling – and life in the city.
In regards to obtaining new clients, what is your most successful form of marketing?
Social media, especially Instagram and Pinterest, and my blog have been wonderful for sharing and connecting with potential clients, but I’ve found that word of mouth is definitely the best kind of marketing there is.
What advice do you have for those looking to be their own boss?
Get to work, give it a try, and don’t be afraid of failing!
Just for fun…
Favorite Philly restaurant: It’s a tie between Audrey Claire (for dinner) and Parc (for brunch)!
If you could have a dinner party with 5 people, living or dead, who would you invite? Coco Chanel, Kate Spade, Gertrude Stein, Steve Jobs, and Lauren Bush
All time favorite movie: Breakfast at Tiffany’s
