Chatting with Kira Alejandro

Kira Alejandro

When you hear Kira’s music, you would never guess she is only 17 years old. The passion in her voice, the beautiful lyrics and the pure talent (she sings, writes her own music and plays the piano, ukulele and some guitar) is remarkable. Kira’s also already shared album space with Paul McCartney. Her song “Better Days” was included on the Songs After Sandy album, a compilation whose proceeds go to the Hurricane Sandy Relief.

Kira attends the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, a school known for their highest quality artistic training. A video of Kira performing her song “Death Stars In Your Eyes” is on constant rotation at school. She says the song, about Star Wars, was just a joke. However, when you listen to it you’ll realize why Interlochen thinks it’s anything but funny. What are Kira’s plans after high school? Undecided. She will either attend college or focus on her music.

When did your interest in music begin?
I’ve always been into music because my dad’s a musician. It elevated in Middle School when I started taking piano lessons and singing at Cab Calloway.

What style is your music?
I would say Indie Pop.

Where do you find your song-writing inspiration?
I tend to write about relationships. There’s so much to say.

Who are some of your favorite musicians?
Regina Spektor, Vampire Weekend, Local Natives, Kimbra and Esperanza Spalding.

Locals can see Kira perform July 18 and 19 at World Cafe Live at the Queen Theater.
