Soul Cycle!!!

Soul Cycle

When I get the opportunity to be in NYC, I love to take a Soul Cycle class. If you have never heard of it, it’s basically a spin class that feels like a dance party! The energy is infectious and the members have a cult like obsession for this workout.

On a regular basis, I spin about five days a week at the YMCA. I’m in no way eligible for the Tour De France, but, consider myself to be a pretty strong cyclist. However, in the pitch black (with the exception of the candle lit instructor), hot and sweaty room of Soul Cycle, I find myself gasping for breath and wringing out my ponytail. The heart thumping beat of the music and synchronized motion of all 62 riders in one small room is unlike any other class I’ve ever taken.

While the ethnic blend of cyclists is as diverse as NYC itself, there is a uniformity to the body type. Strong, sinewy participants in little black bike pants, Soul Cycle tanks and headbands make them seem like a team rather than a random group of exercise students.

I had the great fortune to take Melanie’s class at the Soul W77 studio. Melanie is one of the original instructors and continues to be one of the most popular. She is a combination of GI Jane and a devout yogi. She encouraged all of us to “feel the music” and “let it all go to become one with the beat”. Hokey? Maybe. But, I have to say that her philosophy and energy were contagious! The forty five minutes flew by in the blink of an eye.

As I left the studio, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the fact that a mere two doors down was a Crumbs Bakery. Calories in, calories out! No excuses!

Give Soul Cycle a try! You will NOT be sorry. I promise.
