The Day For Resolutions

Carroll and I have a weekly meeting to review current projects, discuss perspective clients and, most importantly, to talk about ways we can improve and grow. We are constantly making goals and creating to-do lists for the business but not necessarily for ourselves. News Years is always a great opportunity to sit down and think about what you can do to be happier and healthier. Identifying the changes you want to make is the easy. The hard part is actually making those changes.

I recently read The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. (If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it!) Gretchen gives tips on making resolutions. These are the ones I found most helpful;
1. “Most important: Be specific. People often make abstract resolutions: “Be more optimistic,” “Find more joy in life,” “Aim high.” Instead, look for a specific, measurable action. “Distract myself with fun music when I’m feeling gloomy,” “Watch at least one movie each week,” “Buy a plant for my desk” are resolutions that will carry you toward those abstract goals.”
2. Consider giving up a resolution. If you keep making and breaking a resolution, consider whether you should relinquish it entirely. Put your energy toward changes that are both realistic and helpful. Don’t let an unfulfilled resolution to lose twenty pounds or to overhaul your overgrown yard block you from making other, smaller resolutions that might give you a big happiness boost. (You can read the rest of Gretchen’s tips here.)

I’m going to take the day to think about my own resolutions and get back to you. However, Carroll knows exactly what she hopes to accomplish in 2013.  We hope you’re inspired to make some resolutions of your own. Happy New Year!

New York City Inspiration

Sometimes you need a change of scenery to be inspired and recharge your batteries. This past weekend I went to Manhattan to visit a close friend. The train ride was the perfect 95 minute trip. I sipped on a piping cup of coffee while I worked on a project and responded to emails.

When I arrived in the city, we ventured to the West Village for brunch at Extra Virgin. The West Village is my favorite neighborhood in Manhattan, especially this time of year. I love the holiday decorated town homes and the Christmas trees for sale on the street corners. After shopping in the nearby boutiques we headed uptown to Henri Bendel to buy a few gifts. We spent hours walking, taking in the energy around us. In the evening we headed to the East Village for pasta and to 5 Ninth in the Meatpacking District for drinks.

Some people feel exhausted and stressed from the city, but I think it’s the best place to go when you need some sparkle and creativity.
